I am writing to you about Important News About Internet Commerce. NEW SUPERSTORE HAS NO WALLS--AND ESPECIALLY NO GLASS CEILING
NORTH WALES, PA., August 27, 1998 -- Frustrated with the opportunities available to young women in the business world, Allison Milke decided to start her own company. As a result, she now owns an online computer software superstore. Her online store offers over 50,000 titles--far more than the well-known retail chains. Yet her store can’t be found on main street or in any shopping mall. It’s on the Internet. The name of her company is also the address: SOFTWARESOFTWARE.COM Milke, 24, is a graduate of the University of Delaware, where she was a communications major and worked on the campus TV station. After college, she found that most careers available to young females offered low pay, long hours, and little opportunity. The unrewarding prospects brought out her business savvy and entrepreneurial spirit. She researched many different business opportunities before deciding to open the online store. Her parents, peers and friends thought she was crazy trying to compete with corporations that have millions to spend. This only made Milke more determined. Within a few months she learned enough about online marketing to create and launch her business. Two features of SOFTWARESOFTWARE.COM distinguish it from the other software stores. One is the sheer volume of titles available. Categories range from personal applications, heavy-duty business tools, to games and entertainment. All the major publishers are represented. Many titles can be downloaded immediately, which eliminates waiting as well as shipping charges. Selected computer hardware and accessories are also available. The second distinguishing mark of SOFTWARESOFTWARE.COM is the lower cost--20% to 50% less than retail stores. A prime reason for this is that a store on the Internet costs far less to open and operate than one made of bricks and mortar. Milke’s goal is to build SOFTWARESOFTWARE.COM into the number one software reseller on the planet by offering the largest selection, lowest prices, and outstanding customer service. Credit-card transactions are protected by a security system. She is committed to exceed all her customers’ expectations. For shoppers, doing business on the Internet can mean wider selection,
convenience, and lower prices. For a 24-year old woman like Milke, another
big advantage is this: not only does an Internet business lack bricks and
mortar, but there’s no glass ceiling in cyberspace.

| 23-9-98 | Dear imagenvasca@codeconet.com (Imagen Vasca on line):
I am:
I am writing to you about Orwell and the American President. For Publication Consideration By
George Orwell and The American President I was watching Bill Clinton’s endless videotaped testimony before the grand jury when I suddenly heard the ghost of George Orwell whisper in my ear: “you see Joe, this is what I meant.” During the nineteen sixties and early seventies, many on the political left in America revered the literary works of George Orwell. His warnings of the hazards of “doublespeak” and other forms of linguistic abuse were repeatedly referred to in the context of protests against what was viewed as our governments cynical, misleading, and even dangerous manipulation of the English language as an instrument of “oppressive” social and political control. “Big business” were accused of manipulation, using our language as a harmful form of commercial propaganda, amounting to nothing short of mass brainwashing. But most of the criticism of that time centered around the “doublespeak” used by the US military in its execution of the increasingly unpopular Vietnam war. Cynicism grew as civilian deaths were described as “collateral damage,” bombings were called “protective reaction strikes,” and first strike attacks were described as “preemptive counterattacks.” Then came Watergate with its oceans of doublespeak. The left had a field day. “I didn’t lie Senator, I merely put fourth an inoperative statement,” one witness told the House Judiciary Committee. Enough said. Indeed, in the nineteen sixties and early seventies, it seemed as though the writings of Orwell belonged to the political left, lock stock and barrel. But then a funny thing happened. It is fairly difficult to pin-point the exact timing of what in hindsight amounted to a dramatic cultural transformation, but by sometime in the mid to late 1970’s many liberals (not all), began to move away from stressing the need for clarity, directness, and honesty in the use of language, to stressing the exact opposite. It was almost like the world turned itself on its head, as the works of George Orwell were gradually viewed with suspicion by the apostles of the “new left,” and conversely, embraced by embattled conservatives, particularly neo-conservatives who gleefully began to point the finger at increasing liberal linguistic excesses. Somewhere around that time, the term “political correctness” emerged. A term that would ultimately become a mainstay in the American cultural lexicon, creating a backlash by many who began to proudly wear the label “politically incorrect.” In this strange new reality, many “liberals” began to aggressively practice what they had so righteously preached against, by using language not as a precise “neutral” medium to express their ideas, but as an aggressive propaganda tool to reflect, advance, and implement a leftist political agenda with little, or even no regard for honesty and candor. They had come full circle, as the ends had come to justify the deceptive means. And so it was that over time, trashy street talk became a “genetically based” language, called “ebonics,” ethnic separatism became “multiculturalism,” ghetto’s and slums were suddenly “the inner city,” Indians would be transformed into “native Americans,” blatant, discriminatory racial and gender preferences were termed “affirmative action,” a five year olds harmless flirtation became “sexual harassment,” the poor are “economically non-affluent” or “disadvantaged,” individuals not of European extraction were labeled “people of color.” Environmental activists got into the act and the next thing you know, jungles would miraculously become “rain forests,” swamps mysteriously turned into “wetlands.” Government spending became “investing in our future for the sake of our children,” taxes, without warning, turned into “revenue enhancing vehicles,” lies were now called “misspeak.” “I didn’t lie I misspoke,” or, “I told the truth but mislead.” The blind became “visually impaired,” the disabled “physically challenged,” and politically inspired murder, according to the State Department, was the “arbitrary deprivation of life” (that’s not a joke, the term has been officially used by the Clinton State Department to avoid offending friendly countries who have engaged in sever human rights violations, like communist China). It didn’t take long for the new language to spread like cancer beyond the world of politics. Reality was no longer what was real, it was what we decided to call it, and self-esteem became more important than clarity. Elevator operators are now “members of the vertical transportation corps,” doorkeepers are “access controllers,” used cars are “pre-owned” or even “experienced,” bus drivers are “urban transportation specialists,” garbage collectors are “sanitation engineers” it’s not a TV rerun, it’s an “encore,” its not cheep vinyl it’s “genuine imitation leather,” It’s not a fake diamond, it’s a “real counterfeit diamond,” etc.…etc.… Many of these terms seem innocent enough. Harmless and even silly exaggerations that are worthy of a laugh. But many of these terms are also genuinely calculated to deceive and control the unwitting. Political and legal motivated propaganda plain and simple. Although the practice of Orwellian “doublespeak” is by no means exclusive to political liberalism, clearly, it is the professional liberal activist, members of the “new left” if you will, who have over the last two decades elevated the use of such language to a destructive fine art indeed. And it is conservatives who have reveled in making fun of what in many cases is a deeply disturbing phenomenon. But in truth, far from making fun of the practice, all of us, whether we are liberal or conservative, should be extremely concerned when language is used to promote an agenda in a manor that is so grossly deceptive, evasive, euphemistic, confusing, or self-contradictory. Especially when it has pernicious social or political consequences. Which leads me to make the obvious timely point: President Clinton’s videotaped testimony before the grand jury was the ultimate display of Orwellian doublespeak. The mother of all modern linguistic manipulation, which will be analyzed by psychologists and anthropologists for years to come. His torturous, misleading use of the English language and his selective, warped interpretation of what should be clear and obvious will have a profound long-term social impact on our culture, especially if he gets away with it. Sex is not sex, lying is not lying, perjury is not perjury, witness tampering is not witness tampering, obstruction of justice is not obstruction of justice, the word is, is not is, alone is not alone, etc.., etc... Orwellian doublespeak, particularly of the political and legal kind, of the Clinton kind, is language that pretends to communicate but it really doesn’t. It is language deliberately designed in advance to indoctrinate, to mislead the intended audience and exaggerate, or hijack the “moral high-ground” with fancy sounding euphemisms. It is the product of clear, calculated thought, intended from the outset to control, pervert reality, corrupt the mind and distort the thought process. It is language that makes the bad seem good, the negative appear positive, the unpleasant appear attractive. It is language that avoids or shifts responsibility and undermines honest public debate. It is an oppressive form of communication that ultimately confines our thought, suffocates our ability to express ourselves freely, and encourages dangerous “group think.” It breeds suspicion, distrust, cynicism, and ultimately hostility. In his famous essay “politics and the English Language,” George Orwell writes that: “The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one’s real and one’s declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to the long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish squirting out ink…. In our time… political speech and writing are largely the defense of the indefensible…Thus political language has to consist largely of euphemisms, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness…Political language…is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.” There is no question, that if we train ourselves to recognize Orwellian
doublespeak when we hear it, and to confront it at every opportunity, it
will be an extremely bad day for Bill Clinton who has come to exist
within the confines of such language. Clinton is the perfect example of
what happens when someone is seeped in situational ethics, moral relativism
and values clarification. In the
If there is a threat to the survival of American culture and civilization, much of that threat can be found in the struggle for control over our day to day language. The words we chose to incorporate into our vocabulary, and the context in which we use them will have a profound impact on the direction we move in as a society. If we fail to demand clarity and sincerity, especially from our leaders, Bill Clinton will not be a passing phenomenon, he and his ilk will be the norm for years to come.
